The Last Song of John Proffit, 1991.

Recordings of "The Last Song of John Proffit," a historical play written by Tommy Thompson, banjo player and founding member of the Red Clay Ramblers. The play is set in the mid-19th century and is based, in part, around the life of popular minstrel show entertainer Dan Emmett, and his interactions with the Snowden family, an African-American musical family from Mt. Vernon, Ohio. The play focuses on the interaction of Anglo-American and African-American musicians, especially the composition of the song "Dixie" and the development of the banjo, as well as the life of minstrel show entertainers and the repertoire of the shows themselves. The play was recorded at a 1991 performance at the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, N.C. Fiddler Clay Buckner of the Red Clay Ramblers provided the musical accompaniment.
